چکیده

Magnesium diboride (MgB 2 ) has a transition temperature (Tc) of 40 K, i.e., about 4 times as high as that of niobium (Nb). We have been evaluating MgB 2 as a candidate material for radio-frequency (RF) cavities for future particle accelerators. Studies in the last 3 years have shown that it could have about one order of magnitude less RF surface resistance (Rs) than Nb at 4 K. A power dependence test using a 6 GHz TE011 mode cavity has shown little power dependence up to 12 mT (120 Oe), limited by available power, compared to other high-Tc materials such as YBCO. A recent study showed, however, that the power dependence ofRs is dependent on the coating method. A film made with on-axis pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has showed rapid increase in Rs compared to the film deposited by reactive evaporation method. This paper shows these results as well as future plans.

Tests on Mgb2 for Application to Srf Cavities*

Magnesium diboride (MgB2) has a transition temperature (Tc) of ~40 K, i.e., about 4 times higher than niobium (Nb). Studies in the last 3 years have shown that it could have about one order of magnitude less RF surface resistance (Rs) than Nb at 4 K and seems to have much less power dependence than high-Tc materials such as YBCO. However, it was also found that it will depend on the way you dep...

Designing Superconducting Cavities for Accelerators

Rapid advances in the performance of superconducting cavities have made RF superconductivity a key technology for accelerators that fulfil a variety of physics needs: high energy particle physics, nuclear physics, neutron spallation sources, and free electron lasers. New applications are forthcoming for frontier high energy physics accelerators, radioactive beams for nuclear astrophysics, next ...

Superconducting Microwave Cavity Made of Bulk MgB2

We report the successful manufacture and characterization of a microwave resonant cylindrical cavity made of bulk MgB2 superconductor (Tc ≈ 38.5 K), which has been produced by the Reactive Liquid Mg Infiltration technique. The quality factor of the cavity for the TE011 mode, resonating at 9.79 GHz, has been measured as a function of the temperature. At T = 4.2 K, the unloaded quality factor is ...

Efficient Traveling-wave Accelerating Structure for Linear Accelerators

The shaped traveling-wave (STW) structure contains periodic structure of cavities with optimal shape and magnetic coupling operating in the forward travelingwave mode. The structure combines the advantages of conventional standing-wave (SW) and traveling-wave (TW) structures. It ensures high efficiency of the use of radio-frequency (RF) power for the particle acceleration inherent in the SW str...

Introduction to Rf Linear Accelerators

After a short introduction to applications of RF linacs and their advantages and drawbacks as opposed to circular accelerators, the model of RF resonant cavities and their excitation by RF sources or beam is introduced. Then beam dynamics notions, essential to linacs, such as transit-time factor, synchronism, r.m.s. properties, matching and mismatching in linear or nonlinear forces, are presented.
